The tanning salon market has been growing steadily in recent years and is expected to continue on this upward trajectory.

The investment needed depends on whether you choose to rent or buy a sunbed. Lease requires a lower initial investment, but you’ll pay for 1-3 years, which typically includes services like repairs.

Buying a sunbed requires a larger upfront payment, but you immediately own the equipment, which means you can sell it. However, you will be responsible for maintenance and repairs unless you purchase a Tansun Sunbeds service and maintenance plan.

In addition to the sunbed itself, you may incur additional costs for upkeep, relamping, supplies and materials for marketing or safety signage for your salon.

One key consideration is your competition. You'll want a sunbed that matches or surpasses the quality offered by local competitors, as this will affect the pricing you can charge.

Another factor to consider is the size of your salon. Will a horizontal bed fit, or is a standing sunbed a better option? If you're unsure, we can help you determine the best choice for your space.

Yes, with the right strategy, you can maintain profitability. Sunbeds are used throughout the year, though usage does drop in the hottest months. The key is to balance your revenue during the cooler months. Additionally, there are ways to increase your summer earnings.

Adding a sunbed can create a relatively "passive" income stream and provide opportunities to cross-sell your other services and products. Here are five reasons why a sunbed is a valuable addition to your salon.

Beyond the initial investment, you'll need to budget for ongoing expenses such as repairs, electricity, tanning lotions, and cleaning supplies. Tansun Sunbeds also offer competitive pricing, finance options, and flexible leasing plans to ensure fully affordable solutions.

Unlike spray tanning, no specific training is required to offer sunbed services. However, it’s advisable to stay informed about safe tanning practices and learn how to properly maintain your sunbeds. The Sunbed Association provides a UV Training Programme for this purpose.

Never use a sunbed without wearing eye protection. Closing your eyes isn’t enough because eyelids are too thin to protect eyes from UV radiation. Tanning without eye protection can cause short and long-term damage to eyes.

The power and UV output can vary considerably from sunbed to sunbed. A professional sunbed operator will advise on the correct session length, dependent upon sunbed, skin type and stage of tan development.

A new regulation now requires all sunbeds to have a maximum irradiance level of 0.3W/m2 and this will mean the length of a session will need to be increased to achieve the same dosage.

Moisture is key to tanning and a UV lotion is designed to replace moisture lost during the tanning session. However, this is not it’s only function. Many lotions contain Tyrosine, an ingredient that stimulates the tanning process.

Other lotions contain cosmetic bronzers, or DHA (the main ingredient of fake tan). The new generation of lotions contain ingredients that refine and enhance the skin as well as ingredients that push the tanning process beyond the natural tanning plateau.

The type of ballast can vary across different tanning beds. Ballasts are used to control the power sent to the UV lamps. Electronic ballasts use a series of induction coils whereas Magnetic ballasts use one.

Beds with a magnetic ballast may have a minimal flicker or hum whereas this is almost non-existent a bed with electronic ballasts. UV equipment is designed to contain the lamps, starters and ballasts behind a specifically designed acrylic composite that allows UV rays to work effectively. Modern ballasts work at a much higher frequency, allowing for more efficient use of power.

Stand-Up tanning is fantastic for short, convenient tanning whereas lay-down tanning is great for relaxing. Tansun Sunbeds have combined the best of both worlds across our lay down ranges with compact solutions. View our product pages for more info.

The 0.3 process is a slower, more gentle way to tan in line with EU regulations. The tanning result is deeper, darker and lasts. 0.3 compliant lamps emit a lower amount of UV per square metre than standard lamps (Erythmically weighted) and this dramatically reduces the risk of over-exposure.

With over 40 years of experience in sunbeds and UV tanning, Tansun Sunbeds have an exceptional depth of knowledge on which lotions are optimal for use with our equipment and which products achieve the best results.

To complement the integrity of our sunbeds and ensure we maintain a high standard of service, Tansun Sunbeds have curated the best collection of which lotions to use with our sunbeds in line with our partner suppliers. This is for the benefit of all of our customers.

When taking a controlled sunbed session (following regulations plus guidance for your skin type) you do not need to use a sun protection factor cream. Using one during your session may inhibit your results. If you are unsure on how to operate a controlled sunbed session, contact a professional for support.

Tanning accelerators speed up the tanning process by maximising the amount of UV light your skin can absorb in the session.

They also add the nutrients your skin needs to produce melanin, the brown pigment we know as a tan. All of the accelerators in our online store are top salon quality products to help you to achieve your goals. Some accelerators also contain small amounts of bronzer to give you a natural glow whilst your tan develops.

UVA contributes to temporary darkening while UVB is responsible for producing new melanin for a more intense and long-lasting tan.

Sunbeds use UV lamps, similar to the sun, to stimulate melanin and tan the skin, emitting both UVA and UVB rays. UVA provides a quick tan, while UVB helps develop a longer-lasting tan. Indoor tanning offers controlled UV exposure, unlike the variable intensity and mix of UVA/UVB in natural sunlight. Both methods increase melanin to tan the skin.
